Indiana Hoosiers
The Indiana Hoosiers are the sports teams of Indiana University Bloomington. They compete in NCAA Division I and the Big Ten Conference, with 24 varsity teams. The school colors are cream and crimson, and the teams are nicknamed the Hoosiers. The official mascot is Hoosier the Bison (reintroduced in 2025). The fight songs are “Indiana, Our Indiana” and “Indiana Fight!” and the alma mater is “Hail to Old IU.”
Indiana has a long history of success across many sports, earning 25 NCAA team national championships and numerous individual titles. The men’s basketball program is especially famous, with five NCAA championships (1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, 1987) and a reputation for passionate fans. The 1976 basketball team is notable for finishing the season undefeated.
Among other standout programs, men’s soccer has eight national championships and many Big Ten titles, making it one of the top college programs in the country. Indiana’s swimming and diving program has a storied past as well, with multiple national titles and many All-Americans. The Hoosiers also have strong traditions in cross country, wrestling, baseball, softball, and more, and IU athletes have gone on to compete in the Olympics.
Rivalries are a big part of Hoosier sports culture. The team faces Purdue in the Indiana–Purdue rivalry and Kentucky in the Indiana–Kentucky rivalry. The annual Little 500 bicycle race, begun in 1951, is a beloved IU tradition that draws national attention.
Indiana’s athletic program has produced many Olympians and national champions, and its teams regularly compete for conference and national honors. Key facilities include Memorial Stadium (football) and Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall (basketball), along with other venues like Bart Kaufman Field and the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
