Larry McCall
Larry Stephen McCall (born September 8, 1952) is a former American Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed. McCall’s MLB career lasted from 1977 to 1979, and his overall record was 2–2 with a 5.04 ERA and 10 strikeouts.
Early life
McCall was born in Asheville, North Carolina. He went to Enka High School in Candler, where he helped the baseball team win the 1970 North Carolina 3A state title.
Professional career
He signed with the Baltimore Orioles in 1971 as an amateur free agent. In 1974, the California Angels purchased him but later returned him to the Orioles. He was released by the Orioles in April 1976 and signed with the New York Yankees the same day.
MLB career
McCall made his major league debut on September 10, 1977, for the Yankees against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees lost that game 19–4. On November 10, 1978, he was traded to the Texas Rangers in a deal that brought several players, including Dave Righetti, to New York. He played his final MLB game on September 27, 1979, for the Rangers. On January 4, 1980, he was traded from the Rangers to the Cleveland Indians.
Coaching career
McCall spent many years as a coach in the Orioles organization. He was the pitching coach for the Bluefield Orioles in 1990, then coached the Kane County Cougars for two seasons. He led the Frederick Keys in 1993 and stayed there for three seasons. He moved to the High Desert Mavericks in 1996, then coached the Bowie Baysox in 1997. That off-season he coached in Australia for the Perth Heat. He spent four years with the Rochester Red Wings, then coached the Gulf Coast League Orioles in 2002 and the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2003. In 2005 he won the Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award. He served as the Orioles’ bullpen coach in the second half of 2006. After 21 years in the Orioles organization, his contract was not renewed in 2010.
