1971–72 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team
The 1971–72 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team played in the Big Ten under head coach Johnny Orr. They finished 14–10 overall and 9–5 in the conference, tying for third place in the Big Ten. The team did not receive an NCAA Tournament or NIT invitation.
Captains were Wayne Grabiac and Dave Hart, with Henry Wilmore as the team MVP. Home games were at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Assistant coaches were Fred Snowden and Dick Honig (freshmen).
Michigan led the Big Ten in scoring offense in conference play (81.8 ppg), field goal percentage (45.3%), and rebounding (51.6 rpg). The team spent four weeks in the AP Top Twenty, peaking at No. 9, but finished unranked in the final polls. They beat two ranked opponents: No. 16 Illinois 75–70 on January 11, 1972, in Champaign and No. 6 Ohio State 88–78 on January 29, 1972, at Crisler Arena. Henry Wilmore earned Consensus second-team All-America honors. Four players from the team were later drafted into the NBA.
