Bertram Watkins
Bertram Thomas Lewis Watkins (25 June 1902 – 22 December 1982) was an English cricketer who played as a wicket-keeper for Gloucestershire. He was born in Gloucester and batted right-handed.
Watkins played 30 first-class matches for Gloucestershire between 1932 and 1938. He made his debut in 1932 against Glamorgan, as the team rotated several wicket-keepers in the absence of Harry Smith. In that season he appeared eight times, took 11 dismissals (7 catches and 4 stumpings) and scored 27 runs.
He returned to first-class cricket in 1937 after Vic Hopkins injured his finger. He kept wicket in 21 matches that year, making 41 dismissals and scoring 161 runs. His performances earned him a county cap and a contract for 1938. He played only once in 1938, against Leicestershire, as Andy Wilson became the long-term successor to Harry Smith.
Outside of first-class cricket, Watkins worked as a groundsman for Gloucester City CC in the 1930s. After World War II he worked for the Duke of Beaufort as the groundsman of the cricket ground at Badminton House. He died in Badminton, Gloucestershire, in 1982 at the age of 80.
