Worshipful Company of Firefighters
The Worshipful Company of Firefighters is one of the City of London’s 113 livery companies. It aims to develop firefighting science, fire prevention, and life safety, and it works as a charitable organization while promoting professionalism and the exchange of information among members and others in related fields.
The group began in 1988 as the Guild of Firefighters. It was recognised by the City of London Corporation in 1995 as a company without livery and was granted livery in 2001, becoming the Worshipful Company of Firefighters. It received its Royal Charter on 11 December 2013. It ranks 103rd in the order of precedence among livery companies.
The company is based at Coopers’ Hall on Devonshire Square, sharing the building with the Worshipful Company of Coopers. The Clerk is Max Dissanayke. The Beadle since July 2024 is Matthew Stokes, who took over from John Norris after 36 years of service.
Its coat of arms includes symbolic elements such as a fire helmet, and the motto is Flammas Oppugnantes Fidimus Deo. The company’s church is St Mary-le-Bow.
