Cantharellus cinnabarinus

Cantharellus cinnabarinus, the red chanterelle, is a small edible mushroom found mainly in eastern North America. Its bright flamingo-pink to red-orange colors come from the carotenoid canthaxanthin. The cap is funnel-shaped with forked, false gills that run down the bare stem. It grows on the ground in hardwood and mixed forests, usually in acidic soils, from June to October, and is often scattered or found in small groups. It forms a mycorrhizal relationship with trees. The spore print is white to pink. It is considered edible and good to eat, and it tends to be smaller and more slender than other chanterelles, with its forked gills helping distinguish it from Hygrocybe.
