Incorrect
Incorrect means not correct or not true. It describes something with mistakes or something that isn’t in line with the facts, rules, or what was expected. The opposite is correct.
When you use it:
- For facts: The statement “The Earth orbits the Sun” is correct; “The Earth is flat” is incorrect.
- For math: “2 + 2 = 5” is incorrect.
- For guesses or claims: “That answer is incorrect” means it’s wrong.
Alternatives: Synonyms include wrong, mistaken, and erroneous. Antonyms include correct and true. “Incorrect” sounds more formal or technical than “wrong.”
Origin: from Latin incorrectus, meaning not put together correctly.
