Hugh O'Donnell (footballer)
Hugh O'Donnell (15 February 1913 – 9 May 1965) was a Scottish footballer who played as a left winger. He was born in Buckhaven, Scotland, and died in Preston, England, at age 52. He stood 5 ft 7 in tall. He began his career with Wellesley Juniors before turning professional with Celtic, where he played from 1930 to 1935. He then joined Preston North End (1935–1939), making 132 league appearances and scoring 29 goals, before moving to their rivals Blackpool (1939–1946).
O'Donnell made his Blackpool debut on 18 March 1939 in a 0–0 draw with Bolton Wanderers and scored Blackpool's goal in a 2–1 defeat at Arsenal on 10 April 1939. The 1939–40 season was disrupted by World War II. His last Blackpool appearance came on 23 November 1946, in a 4–2 defeat at Leeds United, in which he scored Blackpool's first goal.
Following Blackpool, he played for Rochdale (1946–1947), making 40 league appearances and scoring 14 goals, and finished his career with Halifax Town (1947–1948), with 13 appearances and 1 goal. Hugh O'Donnell was the younger brother of Frank O'Donnell; the brothers played together at Celtic, Preston North End and Blackpool. He passed away in 1965 at the age of 52.
