French submarine Requin (1924)
The French submarine Requin was the lead ship of the Requin-class submarines built for the French Navy in the 1920s. It was laid down on 14 June 1922, launched on 19 July 1924, and commissioned on 28 May 1926.
The Requin measured about 78.3 meters in length, with a beam of 6.84 meters and a draught of 5.10 meters. It displaced 1,150 long tons on the surface and 1,441 long tons submerged. It could dive to a depth of up to 80 meters.
Propulsion came from two diesel engines (2,900 hp) and two electric motors (1,800 hp). It could reach 15 knots on the surface and 9 knots underwater. Its range was 7,700 nautical miles at 9 knots on the surface and 70 nautical miles at 5 knots when submerged. The crew consisted of 51 men.
Armament included ten 550 mm torpedo tubes, one 100 mm deck gun, and two 8 mm machine guns.
Fate: The Requin was captured by Italian forces at Bizerte, Tunisia on 8 December 1942 and renamed FR 113. It was recaptured by German forces on 9 September 1943 and was sold for scrap in Genoa, Italy in 1944.
