Hubertihaus
Hubertihaus is a hunting lodge near the Almsee, south of Grünau im Almtal in Austria. It is owned by the House of Hanover and is not open to visitors. The lodge is named after Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters. In German it is also known as Jagdschloss Auerbach, Jagdschloss Cumberland am Almsee, or Jagdschloss am Almsee.
After Prussia annexed Hanover in 1866, the royal family went into exile in Austria. In 1868 King George V bought a villa in Gmunden, which became his main residence. His son, Crown Prince Ernest Augustus, built the neogothic Cumberland Castle in Gmunden in 1882 and acquired forests near the Almsee, where Hubertihaus was built. In 1913 Ernest Augustus and Victoria Louise honeymooned there. In 1927 King Paul of Greece met Frederica of Hanover at the lodge. Cumberland Castle was sold to the State of Upper Austria in 1979, but the forests, a game park, and Hubertihaus remained in a Liechtenstein-based foundation, the Duke of Cumberland Foundation. Today the former royal family still uses the lodge, but it cannot be visited.
