Schandmaul is a German medieval folk rock band from the Munich area. They mix electric guitars and bass with traditional instruments like bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy and shawm to create their distinctive sound.

The band started in 1998 when six musicians from Munich and nearby areas decided to write their own songs instead of performing covers. Their first song Teufelsweib and their self-produced album Wahre Helden followed, and in 2000 they released Von Spitzbuben und anderen Halunken. They later signed with Extratours and, in 2001, with F.A.M.E. recordings, which re-released the second album.

Narrenkönig came out in 2002. That year bassist Hubsi Widmann left and Matthias Richter joined. In 2003 they released Hexenkessel (a live CD/DVD). Wie Pech & Schwefel appeared in 2004, reaching the German top 20. The big acoustic tour in 2005, featuring a string quartet and a large orchestra, ended with a famous concert at Circus Krone and the release Kunststück on CD and DVD.

Mit Leib und Seele, their next studio album, arrived in 2006. Anderswelt followed in 2008, and Traumtänzer came out in 2011. Unendlich, released in 2014, reached No. 2 in Germany and earned gold status. LeuchtFeuer appeared in 2016 and topped the German charts. The band also collaborated with Tarja Turunen on the track Zu zweit allein.

Schandmaul has been nominated for the Echo award twice, and several albums have reached high positions on German and Austrian charts. In 2020 they signed with Napalm Records. Some members also play in the band Weto, and Birgit Muggenthaler-Schmack and Anna Kränzlein work on solo projects Sava and Anna Katharina, respectively.

Current members include Thomas Lindner, Birgit Muggenthaler-Schmack, Martin Christoph Duckstein, Stefan Brunner, Matthias Richter and Saskia Forkert. Past members are Hubsi Widmann and Anna Kränzlein.
