Henry Palin Gurney
Henry Palin Gurney (1847 – 13 August 1904) was an English scholar and priest who helped students prepare for Civil Service exams. He teamed up with Walter Wren to run Wren and Gurney, a London cramming college. He was the eldest son of Henry Gurney and Eleanor Palin, born in London. He studied at the City of London School and Clare College, Cambridge, finishing in 1870 as 14th in mathematics and fourth in natural sciences. He was a fellow of Clare from 1870 to 1883. He was ordained a priest in 1871 by the bishop of Ely and served as a curate in Rotherhithe and later at St Peters, Kensington, from 1876 to 1886. In 1877 he and Wren started the Wren and Gurney college. In 1894 he became principal of the Durham College of Science and took the chair in mathematics. He married Louisa Hele in 1872, and they had nine daughters. He died in an accident while climbing alone in Arolla on 13 August 1904.
