Henry Lim Bon Liong
Henry Lim Bon Liong (1951 or 1952 – August 2, 2024) was a Filipino businessman who led several companies and helped boost agricultural innovation in the Philippines. He was the chief executive officer of Sterling Paper Group of Companies, S.P. Properties, Inc., and SL Agritech Corporation, and he served on the governing council of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) from 2005 to 2007. He studied at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Early life
Henry grew up in a Chinese Filipino family in the Philippines. His family spoke Hokkien and lived in a small apartment. Through his father’s hard work, they gained Filipino citizenship. He attended Saint Jude Catholic School in Manila. His father started a bookbinding business that evolved into Sterling Paper Products Enterprises in 1961. When his father died in 1976, Henry, as the eldest son, took over the family business.
As a businessman
Under Henry’s leadership, Sterling Paper expanded with more products and retail outlets, growing beyond its original focus on school and office supplies.
Real estate and agriculture
Henry also moved into real estate with S.P. Properties, Inc. In September 2006, he founded SL Agritech Corporation (SLAC) to address rice shortages in the Philippines. SL Agritech became the country’s leading distributor of hybrid rice seeds and began exporting rice to several countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Madagascar. The name SL comes from the initials of his father’s name.
He also served as president of the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) from 2019 to 2021.
Personal life and death
Henry Lim Bon Liong was married to Rita Ong and had five children. He passed away on August 2, 2024, at the age of 72.
