Hartwick, Delaware County, Iowa
Hartwick is a former townsite in Delhi Township, Delaware County, Iowa, located on the Maquoketa River southwest of Delhi. The Hartwick post office operated from January 1, 1853, to September 24, 1861, and was reestablished on June 12, 1872, before closing again later that year. John W. Clark founded and laid out Hartwick in December 1858. He had already built a sawmill in 1849 and a flour mill in 1853. In 1855, John Whitman opened a blacksmith shop, and soon after there were a cobbler, a brickyard, and a paint shop. The Hartwick Bridge, a bowstring through-truss bridge, crossed the river next to Furman’s Mill. By the turn of the century, Hartwick’s heyday had ended; Clark left in 1861 and others followed. His house was later used as a county poor farm. By 1914, Hartwick was described as a forgotten village. Today, the site is marked by the replacement Hartwick Bridge across the river, along with the Hartwick Marina and the Hartwick Amish General Store.
