Lucas van Foreest
Lucas van Foreest is a Dutch chess grandmaster born on March 3, 2001, in Hengelo. He comes from the famous Van Foreest chess family and is the brother of Jorden van Foreest; his sister Machteld also plays chess. He started playing around the age of six or seven.
He earned the International Master title in 2016 and became a Grandmaster in 2018 at age 17. He won the Dutch Chess Championship in 2019, finishing first on tiebreak after tied play with his elder brother Jorden.
Over the years he has competed in events such as the Tata Steel Challengers and Bruges Masters, and he has studied with coach Sergei Tiviakov. As of February 2026, his FIDE rating is 2519, with a peak rating of 2589 in August 2022. He comes from a family with a long history in Dutch chess, including ancestors who were three-time Dutch champions.
