Heide Rosendahl
Heide Rosendahl, later known as Heidemarie Ecker-Rosendahl, is a retired German athlete who competed mainly in the pentathlon and long jump. She was born on 14 February 1947 in Hückeswagen, Germany.
Key achievements
- Set a world record in the long jump: 6.84 meters at the 1970 Summer Universiade in Turin.
- 1972 Munich Olympics: won gold in the long jump with 6.78 meters, finishing just ahead of Diana Yorgova; two days later, finished second in the pentathlon with 4,791 points.
- Helped West Germany win gold and set a world record in the 4 × 100 meters relay at the 1972 Olympics.
- Named German Sportswoman of the Year in 1970 and again in 1972.
Later life and family
- Rosendahl earned a degree in physical education and worked as a coach at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1976–1990) and with the German Athletics Association (1993–2001).
- She is married to John Ecker, a former UCLA basketball star; their son Danny Ecker became a world-class pole vaulter.
- Her father, Heinz Rosendahl, was a German discus champion in 1948, 1951 and 1953.
