Harby, Nottinghamshire
Harby is a small village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. It is near Doddington in Lincolnshire and is the easternmost settlement in Nottinghamshire. In the 2021 census, Harby had 346 residents, up from 336 in 2011 and 289 in 2001.
Heritage
Eleanor of Castile
The parish church, All Saints’, was built in 1875–76 in the Early English style. In the east wall of the tower there is a statue of Eleanor of Castile, the wife of King Edward I. She died at a nearby house. West of the church is the moated site of Richard Weston’s house. The king ordered Eleanor crosses to be built at places where her body rested overnight during its journey to London.
Windmills
The capless stump of a five-storey windmill stands at the end of Mill Field Close, built about 1877. A post mill was also recorded for Harby.
Parish change
Harby was once a township in the parish of North Clifton. It became a separate parish in 1866.
January 1957 air incident
On January 9, 1957, a de Havilland Vampire jet from RAF Worksop crashed near Harby. One house was completely flattened, and three other homes were damaged. The pilot did not eject due to a blackout. A local resident, Lois Towning, was killed, and others were injured. Fire engines and ambulances attended from nearby towns and villages.
Education and amenities
- Queen Eleanor Primary School serves the village. There is a term-time bus from Harby to Tuxford Academy.
- A No. 67 bus runs from Harby to Newark, Collingham, and Saxilby on Mondays to Saturdays. The nearest railway station is Saxilby on the Doncaster–Lincoln line.
- The village has a playing field with a bowls club and a children’s play park. The village hall has rooms for hire, and the local pub, the Bottle and Glass, serves food. Residents can rent allotments from the parish council. There are no permanent retail shops in the village.
