Breconshire was a 9,776-ton cargo liner built in 1939 for the Glen Line by Taikoo Dockyard in Hong Kong and registered in Liverpool. Taken over by the Royal Navy in World War II, she was converted into a fast tanker to carry fuel oil for Malta convoys. She took part in many operations to supply the island of Malta during the war. On 27 March 1942, while on a convoy from Alexandria to Malta, Axis bombers damaged Breconshire. She was beached to prevent sinking, and some of her valuable petroleum cargo was salvaged. The ship had previously been a Holt liner before conversion.
