Chris Chong Chan Fui
Chris Chong Chan Fui is a Malaysian artist and filmmaker who has worked in both Malaysia and Canada. He is best known for two short films, Pool (Kolam) and Block B, both of which won the Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian Short Film in 2007 and 2008. Each film also made TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten list for its year.
Born in Borneo, Chong studied at the University of Calgary as an international student and spent several years living and working in Canada. Before Pool, he created Crash Skid Love (1999), Minus (2000), and Tuesday Be My Friend (2006). By the time his 2009 feature Karaoke arrived, he had returned to Malaysia. Karaoke premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and later won the Mavericks Award at the Calgary International Film Festival. Since then, he has focused mainly on art, including photography, painting, and video installation.
