Gregor Thum
Gregor Thum (born 2 May 1967) is a German-American historian from Munich who studies Central and Eastern Europe. He studied history and Slavic studies at the Free University of Berlin from 1988 to 1995. From 1995 to 2001 he lectured at Viadrina European University in Frankfurt an der Oder, working with Karl Schlögel on East European history. He earned his PhD in 2002 on how the German city of Wrocław became Polish Wrocław after 1945, and the book appeared in 2003. He has received awards in Germany and Poland.
Thum has held several international teaching and research positions. He was a DAAD visiting assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh (2003–2008) and a DAAD associate professor at the University of Washington (2010–2011). From 2008 to 2010 he was a Junior Fellow at Freiburg’s Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). Since 2012 he has been an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, and since 2014 he has led the History Department’s Graduate Studies. He is working on a project called Mastering the East. The German Frontier from 1800 to the Present. In 2007 Gazeta Wyborcza named him "Ambassador of Wrocław" for his work.
