Dies Irae (band)
Dies Irae is a Polish death metal band from Olsztyn, formed in 1992. They were active from 1992 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2005. Early on, their sound was inspired by Vader and Morbid Angel. The original members were Mauser (guitar/vocals), China (guitar), Czarny (bass) and Gilan (drums). In 1994 they recorded the demo Fear of God, released publicly in 1996. In 1997 Mauser left to join Vader and Dies Irae split up.
The band reformed in 2000 with new members, helped by Doc (Vader) and Novy and Hiro, and began work on a full album. They released Immolated in 2000, which has nine tracks and a video for Lion of Knowledge. Dies Irae signed a four-album deal with Metal Blade Records for worldwide releases, while Metal Mind handled Poland and Avalon/Marquee in Japan. The second album, The Sin War, followed in 2002, recorded at Hertz Studio. In 2003 they toured as part of the Empire Invasion Tour.
Sculpture of Stone, their third album, came out in 2004 and was recorded at Hertz Studio; it has nine songs. Doc was injured and Vitek from Decapitated filled in on drums. Sculpture of Stone was released in Poland on May 19, 2004, with later releases elsewhere. In early 2005 they shot a live DVD and then toured, and in 2009 they released The Art of an Endless Creation, a DVD/CD tribute to Doc who died in 2005. Since 2005 the band has been on indefinite hiatus; members have played in other groups (Novy with Nader Sadek, Mauser with UnSun, Hiro with Sceptic).
