Yenovk Nazarian
Yenovk Nazarian (1868–1928) was an Armenian portrait and landscape painter. He was born in Istanbul and studied at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, then studied art in Italy before returning to Turkey to teach and paint. Much of his pastel work has disappeared, but he is known for a pencil sketch that became an oil portrait of the actor and poet Petros Adamian on his deathbed, and for Bosphorus landscapes. His work shows the influence of the Hovnatanian family.
In the late 1890s he moved with his parents from Istanbul to Rostov-on-Don or Armavir, and later settled in Tbilisi, where he mainly painted portraits for family, friends, and acquaintances. In 1903 he received a special commission to paint Our Lady of St. John for the Mekhitarist monastery on San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice; the painting is kept in their museum. From 1906 to 1910 he was the only painter working in Gyumri. He is said to have painted several notable people, though their locations are unknown. Two of his works are in the National Gallery of Armenia: a portrait of businessman Hovhannes Shalamyan and his wife Mariam.
