Shaun Morgan
Shaun Morgan Welgemoed, born December 21, 1978, is a South African musician best known as the lead singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist for the rock band Seether. He grew up in Pietermaritzburg; his parents divorced when he was a child, and he is the youngest of three siblings. His brother Eugene died by suicide in 2007, and he has a sister named Lucy.
In school, Shaun played rugby until a back injury in his third year led him to pick up the guitar. At fourteen, he discovered Nirvana and the Seattle grunge scene, which inspired him to become a musician. Before Seether, he was in a tribute band and then formed Saron Gas in 1999. After a lineup change, he teamed with bassist Dale Stewart. The band moved to the United States in 2002, changed their name to Seether, and released their major-label debut, Disclaimer, in 2002 (reissued as Disclaimer II in 2004).
Seether has released several albums: Karma and Effect (2005); Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces (2007); Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray (2011); Isolate and Medicate (2014); Poison the Parish (2017); Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum (2020); The Surface Seems So Far (2024). They also released the live CD/DVD One Cold Night in 2006. In 2013, Shaun Morgan collaborated with Lynyrd Skynyrd and John 5 on "Sad Song" for the Last of a Dyin’ Breed special edition.
His musical influences include Nirvana, The Beatles, Metallica, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, and many others. He was endorsed by Schecter Guitars early in his career and later switched to Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay RS guitars.
Personal life: He dated Evanescence singer Amy Lee from 2003 to 2005. He checked into rehab in July 2006. His brother Eugene’s death deeply affected him, and the Seether song "Rise Above This" is a tribute to Eugene. The album Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces was dedicated to him.
Shaun has tattoos: 1308 on his right hand and 2007 on his left, marking the date of his brother’s death. In May 2021, he married his partner Jordan Kirby, with whom he has two children. He identifies as an atheist.
