Giuseppe Maddaloni
Giuseppe Maddaloni, born on 10 July 1976 in Naples, Italy, is a former Italian judoka who competed for his country in the lightweight division (-73 kg) and later in the -81 kg category. He trained with the Fiamme Oro club and was coached by his father, Gianni Maddaloni, in the Scampia district of Naples.
Maddaloni won Italy’s Olympic gold in judo at the 2000 Sydney Games in the -73 kg category. He was European Champion in 1998 and 1999 and his best result at the World Championships was fifth place in 2007. He also competed in the World Juniors in 1996 in Porto, in the -71 kg division.
His life and his father’s work in Scampia inspired the 2014 film L’oro di Scampia (The Gold of Scampia), which began streaming on Netflix in 2022. In 2018 the International Judo Federation released a film about his father and his ongoing efforts, Judo for the World - Italy.
