Calkinsia

Calkinsia is a genus of single-celled organisms in the Excavata group. It has only one species, Calkinsia aurea. These organisms live on the deep seafloor in areas with very low oxygen. Unlike most Euglenozoa, Calkinsia does not fit into the familiar groups Kinetoplastida, Euglenida, or Diplonemida. It is placed in its own subgroup called Symbiontida, along with some DNA sequences found in the ocean that haven’t been matched to known organisms. Some scientists think Calkinsia might be related to Postgaardi, but this is not proven. The genus is named after Gary Nathan Calkins, a 20th-century American protozoologist.
