Walter Terry Saxon
Walter Terry Saxon (April 23, 1836 – December 23, 1924) was a Florida state legislator who represented Hernando County in 1867. Born in Autauga County, Alabama, he studied at the Alabama Military Institute and worked as a surveyor before settling in Brooksville, Florida. He surveyed in the Everglades before the Civil War and later for the Iron Mountain Railroad. During the Civil War he organized the Hernando Guards, captaining Company C, and served in the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment. His father was a prominent plantation owner, and Saxon was a Ku Klux Klan organizer. After the war, he moved to Texas in 1873, where he co-founded the Hamilton Herald, edited a Hamilton County newspaper, and served as county surveyor. He died in 1924 and was survived by a son and daughter. His brother Benjamin Saxon served as sheriff of Hernando County and died after delivering the 1876 election results to Tallahassee.
