Gilbert is a small city in Story County, Iowa, United States, and is part of the Ames metropolitan area. The population was 1,211 at the 2020 census. Gilbert was named after Hezekiah Gilbert, who owned the land where the town began.

Geography: The city covers about 1.1 square miles of land. It lies along the main east–west road E23 and Highway 69, between Ames and Story City. A Union Pacific rail line runs north–south through Gilbert.

Parks and community: Prominent parks include Lions Park, Banford Park, and Upstill Park, which has a walking trail near the elementary school and sports fields. There is a museum on Main Street and two community centers. Ada Haden Lake lies just to the south in Ames, and there are several county parks nearby.

Education: Gilbert is served by the Gilbert Community School District, with Gilbert Elementary, Gilbert Intermediate, Gilbert Middle, and Gilbert High School.
