The Strange Talent of Luther Strode
The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is a six-issue American comic book from Image Comics, created by Justin Jordan with art by Tradd Moore and colors by Felipe Sobreiro. It was published between October 2011 and March 2012.
The story follows Luther Strode, a skinny high schooler who lives with his mother. He orders a mail‑order fitness manual called the Hercules Method and begins training. He discovers he has become incredibly fast and strong. A mysterious figure known as the Librarian watches Luther and decides he is a candidate to unlock even greater power. Luther’s best friend Pete and a girl named Petra become part of his life, and Luther starts fighting crime in a simple black costume.
As Luther’s abilities grow, he learns there is a dark history behind the method. The Librarian explains that the power runs in a long lineage that stretches back to Cain, and that Luther is only the latest person who might fully unlock it. The Librarian’s goal is to spread the Hercules Method, putting Luther and those around him in grave danger. Luther’s mother and friend Petra are pulled into the conflict, and Luther faces brutal foes, including the Librarian’s killers, as he tries to protect the people he cares about.
The climactic battles are intense and violent. Luther’s father is revealed to have abused his mother, and the Librarian ultimately manipulates events to push Luther to his limits. In the final showdown at a fishery, Luther defeats the Librarian but at a terrible cost, including the death of his mother. Luther survives and is later shown returning from a morgue after being shot by police. The story jumps five years, with Luther continuing to confront the forces behind the Librarian and the spread of the Hercules Method.
The six‑issue series also serves as part of a larger trilogy, with Luther taking the fight to the source of the threat. In 2020, it was reported that Allnighter optioned a film adaptation of Luther Strode with the blessing of Justin Jordan.
