Jay Hernandez (basketball)

Jay Hernandez is an American basketball coach and former player. He is an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA.

Born on Long Island, New York, Hernandez is 6 feet tall and weighs 190 pounds. He went to St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, New York.

College and early playing days
Hernandez started his college career at the University of New Hampshire (1996–1997) before transferring to Hofstra University (1998–2001). He started all three seasons at Hofstra and helped the team reach the NCAA tournament in 2000 and 2001. During summers, he played professional basketball in Puerto Rico for the Guaynabo Mets, Aibonito Polluelos, and Cayey Toritos.

Education and personal life
Hernandez earned an MBA in marketing and management from Hofstra. He is married to Allison, and they have three children: McKayla, Michael, and Morgan.

Coaching career
- Orlando Magic: player development coach (2014–2016), assistant coach (2016–2018)
- Charlotte Hornets: assistant coach (2018–2023); also coached the Greensboro Swarm (G League) in 2021
- Brooklyn Nets: assistant coach (2023–present)
