Ben Hladik
Ben Hladik (born March 8, 1999) is a Canadian football linebacker for the BC Lions in the CFL. He’s from Vernon, British Columbia, and played university football for the UBC Thunderbirds from 2017 to 2019. While at UBC, he appeared in 28 games, recording 189 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, and one interception that he returned for a touchdown. He was named a First-Team All-Canadian in 2018 and a Second-Team All-Canadian in 2019, and he served as the team's defensive captain in both years. The 2020 season was canceled, so he did not play that year but remained eligible for the CFL draft.
Hladik was drafted by the BC Lions in the third round, 22nd overall, in the 2021 CFL draft and signed with the team on May 21, 2021. He made his professional debut on August 6, 2021, against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He played in all 14 regular-season games in 2021, recording two defensive tackles and six special-teams tackles.
In 2022, Hladik earned more time on defense and made his first start on July 21, 2022, after an injury to Boseko Lokombo, totaling six defensive tackles in that game. He later notched his first career interception on August 6, 2022, against the Edmonton Elks. He finished the season with 59 defensive tackles (in 18 games, 13 starts), four pass knockdowns, two sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
On February 6, 2024, the Lions announced that Hladik signed a two-year contract extension with the team.
Personal life: Hladik and his wife, Kailyn, were married in April 2020. His father, Scott, and grandfather, Frank, played high school football in Alberta, and his brothers, Bradley and Andy, played football in Vernon.
