Drymopsalta crepitum
Drymopsalta crepitum, also known as the Cape York heath-buzzer, is a small cicada native to Australia. It was described in 2005 by Australian entomologist Anthony Ewart. The name crepitum comes from Latin for crackling, referring to its calling sound. The forewings are about 11–16 mm long.
This cicada lives in Far North Queensland, from the Cape York Peninsula down to Cooktown and west toward Weipa and Normanton. It favors heathlands, forests with understorey shrubs, and areas near rivers. Drymopsalta crepitum feeds on xylem sap.
Adults sing from December to March, clinging to stems and branches and producing high-pitched chirps with short ticks between them.
