List of drainage basins of Indonesia
This is a summary of Indonesia’s drainage basins (river catchment areas). There are about 42,210 basins used to guide watershed management. Decisions about them consider land condition (including erosion), water quality and quantity, water continuity, socio-economic factors, investments in soil and water conservation, and how land is used.
In the 2015–2019 national plan (RPJMN), 15 basins were designated as priority out of 108 priority basins in the Integrated River Basin Management Plan (RPDAST). Nine basins are also classified as disaster-prone. In 2020–2024, all 108 priority basins are to receive priority attention, especially for soil and water conservation.
Each river basin has a 9-digit code to distinguish it from others with similar names. The code parts indicate:
- the theme (DAS) and the basin itself,
- the region where the basin is located (starting from the western part of the main islands),
- whether the basin covers multiple administrative regions,
- the serial number of the basin within that region, mapped from the 1:250,000 Bakosurtanal map.
An example is the Citarum basin, coded as "DAS220047." This shows it is in the Java region, is an inter-regency/city basin, and is the 47th basin in Java.
There are many basins across Indonesia, including several on the country’s major islands.
