Generoso Pope Athletic Complex
Generoso Pope Athletic Complex
The Generoso Pope Athletic Complex, known as The Pope, is a multi-purpose sports facility on the St. Francis College campus in Brooklyn. It sits at 180 Remsen Street, between Court and Clinton Streets. The complex is named after Generoso Pope, a New York City entrepreneur and philanthropist.
The Pope has three levels. The lower level houses the Aquatics Center with a six-lane, 25-yard pool. The middle level contains the Daniel Lynch Gymnasium, the main venue where St. Francis College’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball teams play. The top level is the Genovesi Center, a 9,000-square-foot addition built in 2003 that hosts volleyball and intramurals.
Key facts:
- Daniel Lynch Gymnasium seats 1,200, one of the smallest capacities in Division I and in the Northeast Conference. It’s the home court for Terriers basketball, on Peter Aquilone Court (named for the son of former Athletic Director Edward Aquilone; dedicated in 2004). A new hardwood floor was installed in 2018.
- The Aquatics Center has a six-lane, 25-yard pool and is home to the Men’s Water Polo team (three NCAA Final Four appearances) and the Women’s Water Polo and Swimming & Diving teams. When not in use, the pool is open to students and the community.
- The Genovesi Center hosts the Terriers’ volleyball teams and is used for intramurals.
The Pope has been used as a filming backdrop for projects like the movie Across the Universe (2007) and the HBO show Flight of the Conchords. The Peter Aquilone Court has appeared on Late Show with David Letterman and The Today Show. In 2011, attending a Terriers game was highlighted by New York Magazine as one of the reasons to love New York.
