Louise Frogley
Louise Frogley (born 15 May 1947 in Surrey, England) is a British costume designer with more than sixty film and TV credits. She is best known for her work with Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney, especially on action and thriller films like Traffic, Quantum of Solace, and Iron Man 3.
She began her film career in the 1980s as an assistant costume designer on Chariots of Fire, working with Milena Canonero. Her first solo credit was Riding High (1981). One of her early notable projects was Mona Lisa (1986), where her outfits helped reveal the heroine’s profession.
Frogley’s first collaboration with Steven Soderbergh was The Limey (1999). She then designed costumes for many of his films, including Traffic, Good Night, and Good Luck, Syriana, The Good German, Ocean’s Thirteen, Contagion, and Free State of Jones. Her style often suits male-led stories set in professional or high-stakes environments, where smart, tailored costumes convey status and power.
Her work with George Clooney includes The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009), Leatherheads (2008), The Ides of March (2011), and The Monuments Men (2014). For The Ides of March, she created clean, classic gray suits that looked modern and flattering. For The Monuments Men, she focused on authentic WWII uniforms and also had to source and coordinate many accessories, like watches and glasses.
In Quantum of Solace (2008), she helped establish a distinctive Bond look with luxurious, worldy tailoring. For Unbroken (2014), she had seven weeks to prepare period costumes and used earth tones to suit Jolie’s color choices.
Frogley has also worked on Marvel films, including Iron Man 3 (2013), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018). Ant-Man 3 involved technical work to revise the previous designs and create the Wasp suit, with months of development and collaboration with armour experts to ensure mobility and detail.
