Gag Island rat
Gag Island rat, also known as Niken's rat, is a rare rodent found only on Gag Island in West Papua, Indonesia. Its scientific name is Rattus nikenii. It was described in 2010 after researchers found it differs in appearance from other Papuan rats. It might live on nearby Raja Ampat islands, but it hasn’t been confirmed anywhere else yet. The species is threatened by nickel mining on Gag Island, and because of this it is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
