Rædwulf of Northumbria
Rædwulf was king of Northumbria for only a short time. His exact family background is unknown, but he may have been related to Osberht and Ælla. He became king after Æthelred, son of Eanred, was deposed. Coins from his reign exist, but little else is known. A later account says he died fighting pagans (the Vikings), but other details are scarce. The Flores Historiarum annals place his reign in 844, though that dating is not reliable. A coin of King Eanred dated to about 850 led scholars to revise the timeline, and Rædwulf’s reign is now thought to be around 858. After his death, the evidence agrees that Æthelred was restored as king.
