Gafsa Archaeological Museum
Gafsa Archaeological Museum is in Gafsa, Tunisia, located in the old city center, opposite the ancient Roman pools.
The museum has a large section about the time when Gafsa was under Roman control. Gafsa was a frontier town with a garrison, usually commanded by a high-ranking military official who lived there. The collection includes everyday life items such as jewelry, coins, sculptures and mosaics. One notable piece is a 4th-century mosaic pavement showing a circus game.
There is also a rich prehistoric collection, including Capsian flint and lithic tools, as well as bone-made tools. The exhibits feature depictions of humans and animals and items related to spiritual life, from Gafsa and the surrounding area.
Among the highlights is a Capsian figurine dating to about 8000 BC, showing that Gafsa has been inhabited since the Mesolithic era and that the Capsian culture is named after the town.
