Kanuru Heggaditi
Kanuru Heggaditi, also known as Kanooru Heggadithi (meaning Proprietress of Kanuru), is a Kannada novel by Kuvempu written in 1936. It tells the story of Indira, a strong and intelligent woman living in the village of Kanuru in rural Karnataka. After marrying into a traditional family, she faces rigid customs and patriarchal control but remains determined to keep her independence. The book explores how family, caste, and societal expectations shape the lives of women, and how tradition clashes with modern ideas. Indira’s journey highlights gender inequality and the struggle for personal freedom in a conservative society. The novel is praised for its realistic portrayal of rural Karnataka and its critique of social norms. A film adaptation, Kanooru Heggadithi, directed by Girish Karnad, was released in 1999.
