The Highland Minute was an education subsidy created by the Committee of Council on Education in Scotland on 30 April 1885. It aimed to help pay for schooling in the sparsely populated Scottish Highlands and to promote Gaelic language education. In 1908 the Education Department told the participating boards that the subsidy would be withdrawn after six months. Despite plans to end the scheme, three Lewis schools were still receiving the aid in 1910: Barva, Lochs and Uig.
