Araiofusus colpoicus
Araiofusus colpoicus is a sea snail in the Fasciolariidae family, which includes spindle and tulip snails. It was described by Dall in 1915 and was originally named Fusinus colpoicus. The holotype is kept at the Smithsonian Institution.
It resembles Barbarofusus barbarensis when about 60 mm long but can be told apart by:
- 13 axial ribs (Barbarofusus barbarensis has 11)
- the ribs are narrower with wider spaces between them
- the revolving spiral threads are sharper with a more noticeable size difference
- on the second-to-last (penultimate) whorl there are 6 major and 6 minor spiral threads crossing the axial ribs, without forming nodules
The shell grows to about 66 mm in total length and has 8 whorls. The combined length of the aperture and siphonal canal is about 36 mm, and the siphonal canal is notably twisted.
Distribution: this species occurs in the Gulf of California.
