Frederick Mostert

Frederick Mostert is a leading expert in intellectual property (IP). He has served as Past President of the International Trademark Association and is currently the President of the Luxury Law Alliance. He is Of Counsel at Bird & Bird in London and was the Chief IP and Legal Counsel at Richemont, the luxury group that includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Alfred Dunhill, and Chloé.

In 2015, he was inducted into the Intellectual Property Hall of Fame for helping make IP a key business asset. He teaches as Professor of Practice at King’s College London and is a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford’s Intellectual Property Research Centre. He has won teaching awards at King’s College and an Education Award for Expanding Opportunities.

Mostert founded the Digital Scholarship Institute and the Digital Communities Lab in London, and he co-developed the Unicode “Troll” emoji. He has served on the boards of Richemont SA, Net-a-Porter, the International Trademark Association, and The Walpole Group, and he currently sits on the boards of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and the Adopt a School Trust; he is also involved with Classics for All and Chatham House.

As an author, Mostert wrote Famous and Well-known Marks – An International Analysis, which has been cited by courts around the world, along with From Edison to iPod and International Trademark Treaties and Agreements. His opinion pieces have appeared in the Financial Times and the South China Morning Post, and he is often sought for IP commentary by international media.

He studied at Columbia Law School and the University of Johannesburg, is a member of the New York Bar and a solicitor of England and Wales, and has practiced at Shearman & Sterling and Fross Zelnick Lehrman & Zissu. His notable pro bono work includes helping Nelson Mandela and the Shaolin Monks. He lives in London with his wife, novelist Natasha Mostert.

Mostert has received numerous honors, including the Life Achievement Award from Global Legal Post and the Lifetime Achievement Award from World Trademark Review, among others. He has also held advisory roles with organizations such as WIPO, EUIPO, the McCarthy Institute, the Art and Science Foundation, and Freedom under Law, and he contributes to editorial boards for several IP publications.
