1870 was a landmark year for Canada. After the Red River Rebellion of 1869–70, Ottawa passed the Manitoba Act to settle the area and grant rights to the Métis. The act created the Province of Manitoba, set up its government, and protected Métis lands and the use of French language and Catholic education in the province. Winnipeg became the provincial capital. The move helped Canada expand into the western prairie region under Prime Minister John A. Macdonald, marking an important step in building a united country.
