Franziska von Karma, known as Mei Karuma in Japanese, is a key character in the Ace Attorney series. She first appears as Phoenix Wright’s rival prosecutor in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Justice for All (2002). She replaces Miles Edgeworth because the creator wanted a new opponent who could challenge Phoenix without Edgeworth always losing. Franziska fights with a whip in court and believes in perfection, aiming to defeat Phoenix. She never beats him in the early game, partly because she is injured by an assassin during a conspiracy against Phoenix’s client. Her real goal is to surpass Edgeworth, who had not beaten Phoenix either.

She returns in later titles, sometimes helping Edgeworth. Franziska was created by series creator Shu Takumi and designed by Tatsurō Iwamoto. Takumi wanted Justice for All to have more outlandish characters, and Franziska is a prime example. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Manfred von Karma, the famous prosecutor from the first game. Franziska became a prosecutor by age 13, went to Los Angeles, and took Edgeworth’s place as Phoenix’s rival to prove herself.

In Trials and Tribulations, she fills in for the missing prosecutor Godot during a trial, while Edgeworth defends. She also appears in Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and its sequel, Prosecutor’s Gambit, working with Interpol and sometimes aiding Edgeworth.

Reception has been mostly positive. The Guardian called her one of the most interesting female video game characters, praising her intelligence and presence despite her cold demeanor. Critics have noted her whip and rivalry with Edgeworth as standout traits; some found her flashy or annoying at first, while others grew to like her as the series continued. Her Japanese name Mei uses a kanji meaning “dark.” Localizers enjoyed writing for her role, and her crying scene in Justice for All was later added by the designer to show a softer side.
