Jhony Brito
Jhony Rafael Brito is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on February 17, 1998, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and he bats and throws right-handed. Brito made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees on April 2, 2023, and was traded to the Padres on December 6, 2023, in the deal that sent Juan Soto to San Diego. His MLB totals through the 2024 season include a win–loss record of 10–9, an earned run average (ERA) of 4.23, and 101 strikeouts.
Brito signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2015 and began in the Dominican Summer League in 2016. After Tommy John surgery in 2017, he missed 2018. He returned in 2019 with the Charleston RiverDogs, then the 2020 minor league season was canceled due to the pandemic. In 2021 he played for Hudson Valley and Somerset, totaling 22 starts with a 7–7 record and a 3.55 ERA, and in 2022 he pitched for Somerset and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 11–4 with a 2.96 ERA. The Yankees added him to their 40-man roster in November 2022. He started 2023 in Triple-A Scranton before being called up to the majors due to an injury to Luis Severino. He went back to the minors briefly in May 2023.
In 2024, Brito played for the Padres, appearing in 26 games with a 4.12 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 43.2 innings. He then suffered an elbow injury with the El Paso Chihuahuas and was placed on the 60-day injured list on September 22, 2024. He began 2025 on the 60-day injured list with a right forearm strain and later had an internal brace surgery to address his UCL and a flexor tendon repair, ending his season and likely keeping him out into 2026.
