2010 United States Senate election in Arizona
The 2010 United States Senate election in Arizona was held on November 2, 2010, with the primary on August 24, 2010. Incumbent Republican Senator John McCain sought reelection to a fifth term. He faced a Republican primary challenge from J. D. Hayworth and other candidates, and used his fundraising strength and endorsements to secure the nomination. On the Democratic side, Rodney Glassman, a Tucson city councilman, ran after exploring options; he became the Democratic candidate.
In the general election, McCain defeated Glassman by a wide margin, receiving 1,005,615 votes (59.07%) to Glassman’s 592,011 votes (34.78%). McCain’s victory kept him in the Senate for five terms. The race featured debates over immigration and border security, including support for Arizona’s SB 1070. As of 2026, this was the last time Coconino and Pima counties voted for the Republican candidate in a U.S. Senate race in Arizona.
