Frankenstein (video game)
Frankenstein is a 1987 single-player text adventure by CRL Group, designed by Rod Pike and Jared Derrett, for the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, and ZX Spectrum. It’s based on Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. You play as Dr. Frankenstein in the first two parts, and as the Monster in the third. The goal is split: Dr. Frankenstein tries to find and destroy his escaped monster, while the Monster seeks freedom and a reason for its existence.
The game uses text commands with some static pictures to set scenes and is similar to Dracula, another CRL title. It is divided into three parts: Part One – Hard Journey, Part Two – The Slaying, and Part Three – The Monster’s Story. Part Three becomes available only after finishing the first two parts. In Part Two you can talk with other characters. In Part Three you can raise the Monster’s intelligence by using its senses, and the experiences also raise its IQ. The game received a 15 certificate for its graphic violence. If you want a large, intelligent text adventure with some striking illustrations, Frankenstein is for you.
