First Look Studios, Inc. was an American independent film and home‑video distributor based in Century City, Los Angeles. It started in 1980 as Overseas Filmgroup, founded by Robert and Ellen Little, to buy and sell foreign and indie films worldwide. It grew to finance and distribute films internationally, and in 1993 launched First Look Pictures for North American distribution. The company went public in 1996 and, in 2001, renamed itself First Look Media as it expanded into Internet content and TV production; Overseas Filmgroup became First Look International in 2003. In 2005 it merged with Capital Entertainment and changed its name to First Look Studios, later acquiring DEJ Productions (2005) and Ventura Distribution (2006), and launching First Look Television (2006). By 2006 its library included about 700 titles. In 2007 Nu Image bought a majority stake, and First Look began releasing Blu-ray titles in 2008. In 2010 the studio filed for bankruptcy; Millennium Entertainment, formed by Nu Image, acquired most assets and reorganized the business as Millennium Entertainment (2010–2014), then Alchemy (2014–2016), and finally FilmRise (2016–present).
