Filipp Agaltsov
Filipp Aleksandrovich Agaltsov (1900–1980) was a Soviet Air Force marshal of aviation and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He commanded Long-Range Aviation from 1962 to 1969, his highest post.
Born in Soldatskoye, in the Tula region, he left school in 1912 and worked at a factory before joining the Red Army in 1919. He fought in Karelia during the Civil War and in the Polish–Soviet War. After studying in military-political schools, he switched to the air forces in 1932 and trained as a pilot. He served as a political officer in the Spanish Civil War (1937–1938).
During World War II he held several commands, including the 292nd Assault Aviation Division (later the 9th Guards) and, from 1944, the 1st Mixed Aviation Corps with the Polish Army. He flew Il-2 attack aircraft. After the war he held top air-force posts, including commander of a major air army, deputy Commander-in-Chief, and inspector roles. He became Marshal of Aviation in 1962 and led Long-Range Aviation until 1969. In 1971 he joined the Group of Inspectors General. He died in Moscow on 29 June 1980 and was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery.
