Hapkido (film)
Hapkido (Chinese: 合氣道), released as Lady Kung Fu in North America, is a 1972 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Huang Feng. It stars Angela Mao and features Carter Wong and Sammo Hung, with early cameos by Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, and Corey Yuen. The film was released by Golden Harvest, runs 92 minutes, and is in Mandarin.
Plot
Set in 1934 in Japanese-occupied Korea, three Hapkido graduates—Yu Ying, Kao Chang, and Fan Wei—return to China to open their own school. The Japanese, aided by Chinese traitors, try to drive them out. After Fan Wei is insulted, he clashes with the oppressors. Kao Chang and Fan Wei are killed by the Black Bear Gang, prompting Yu Ying and her elder brother to fight back and defeat the gang’s leaders.
Release and reception
The film was released on October 12, 1972. In September 1973, it briefly topped the North American box office, briefly overtaking Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon. In 2006, Hong Kong Legends digitally remastered and restored the film.
