European Technology Platform for the Electricity Networks of the Future (SmartGrids) is a European Commission initiative to strengthen the EU’s position in electricity networks, especially smart grids. It brings together all European stakeholders from industry, research, and public bodies to coordinate efforts. The idea for an ETP in this field was proposed by industry and researchers at the first International Conference on the Integration of Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Energy Resources in December 2004. The SmartGrids Platform was launched by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research in 2005.
